Title
Reliefs on the façade of Saigon Opera House
Description
A great number of reliefs can be found on every side of the façade of Saigon Opera House.
Each cluster relief below each frame features a typical Roman mask of Melpomene, an emblematic character of tragedy, with a strong facial expression, their eyes and mouth open wide. The boys underneath with one holding a lyre guitar are believed to be the Cupids, symbolizing the idea of joy, happiness, and playfulness. In addition to characters, the decoration in this part also includes some kinds of fruits, flowers and leaves—all of which emphasizes the notion of a good life, joy, and pleasure as well.
