Title

Marianne

Description

Marianne is a figure that represents the French Republic, and, by extension, the three values "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". She is often portrayed as wearing the Phrygian cap and sometimes holding a pikestaff.
Given her depiction, it might be said that Marianne was inspired by Libertas. However, her name has been attributed to the name Marie-Anne, which was a very common first name in the 18th century, and it was chosen so that this figure became a representation for the common people in France.
