Lune Production
Description
Lune Production, besides Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO), is one of the two main organizers staging performances in contemporary Saigon Opera House.
Lune Production's mission statement is "inspiring Vietnamese culture to the world through art performances" (Lune Production n.d.). Their work presents an exotic image of the cultures of the Vietnamese and/or ethnic minorities through live contemporary dance and circus stunts to an audience who are mainly foreigners. Exoticizing through their use of subjects and objects of cultures, i.e., people, clothing, and tools, as contextualized in space for spectacle; their employment of performative gestures of the circus such as climbing, back-flipping, balancing the body with animal-like intuition, etc.
For example, A O Show juxtaposes the representation of the agricultural culture of Southern/Southeastern Vietnam with that of the city; categorized as a "new circus" genre. Whereas Teh Dar (see illustration) showcases the "wild, raw" culture of the indigenous people(s) of Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands of Vietnam) (Lune Production n.d.).
Thus, one can observe how Lune Production, through their primary focus on exporting Vietnamese and within-border ethnicity minority cultures, economically exploits foreigners' preconceptions, stereotypes, and curiosities toward contemporary Vietnam as both modern and traditional.
