Title

Structure of Saigon City Hall

Description

Located in the very centre of District 1, HCMC, the City Hall is a two-story building with an extended third story in the main block.
Vertically, the hall façade can be divided into three main blocks with symmetrical design. The middle block has five arched main entrances with metal doors and elevated stairs in the first floor and a balcony behind five corresponding arched openings. The top clock and bell tower resemble those in the Paris Hotel de Ville. Two side sections are pushed forward, decorated with few classical elements (engaged columns, broken pediments) and Beaux-Arts symbolic sculptures. This middle block seems to be the peculiar one in the overall building since other sections tend not to have clear classical references, decorative motifs or reliefs. Instead, the left and right blocks are plainly built and decorated, with only square doors, windows, and plain pilasters.
Horizontally, the hall stretches over a long area, blocking one end of Nguyen Hue Boulevard. The horizontal order does not seem so different from the vertical one as only the middle block has a special design with an extended third floor.
