Libertas sculpture on HCMC People's Court

Title
Libertas sculpture on HCMC People's Court
Description
The figure of Libertas (with features of Marianne) is placed on the front frieze of the HCMC courthouse. However, this depiction is more modernized than the original portrayal of Libertas with the pilleus and the rod.
Here, she is holding a book with the word CODE written on it in the left hand and a sword (of justice) in the other. In this case, she represents not only liberty but also justice. And that is not the only element of hybridity in this representation of Libertas (or Marianne). On both sides, there are a man and a woman reclining, both dressed in traditional Vietnamese clothings. This might be an attempt to include the representation of Vietnamese people and culture in public buildings by the French, a kind of association policy.
