Description
Piastre was a unit of currency used in French colonies including French Indochina. The word originates from Italian, meaning “thin mental plate”, and in Latin America it means peace of eight, being called pesos which was used by Venetian traders and later South American countries. During the French colonial period in Vietnam, with the intent of building a stable economy system for trading across Indochina and other French colonies, this French Indochina currency unit was established in 1887. The last piastre coin was produced in 1928.
