Title

King Norodom of Cambodia on coin (1860)

Description

Norodom (1834–1904) was king of Cambodia between 1864 and 1904. He became the king in the year 1960, but he only received the royal crown four years later.
On the coin, there is a depiction of King Norodom on the obverse, encircled by the words NORODOM I ROI DU CAMBODGE ("Norodom I, King of Cambodia") and the year 1860. On the reverse there is the royal arms of Kingdom of Cambodia, used in the period 1860–1970, together with the value of the coin (4 francs).
It is obvious that the French chose to depict Norodom on this coin due to his alliance between him and France, as a result of him signing a treaty giving control of Cambodia's foreign relations in exchange for personal protection in 1863, and another treaty that conceded control of the country's public revenue, custom taxes, and public works. In this way, the depiction of the king does not necessarily represent the country, but rather reflects the power over the king, exercised by the French.
