Title
Ionic order
Description
The Ionic order is the centre of classical orders' hierarchy. The Ionic order originated in Ionia (Greece) around 6th century BC, which explains its name Ionic. Compared to a Doric entablature, an Ionic counterpart has additional dentils (repeating pattern of square or rectangular blocks usually located at the bottom of the cornice). The volute (a spiral scroll in the top of the shaft) and the flute (a vertical groove recessed on the shaft) are two most distinguishable details in Ionic order. With its slender and elegant body, the Ionic column is said to have taken inspiration from the female body while the plain, huge Doric column is based on the proportion of male body.
