Dublin Core

Title

Banknote of Banque de l'Indochine – Regular issues – 500 piastres

Description

Obverse:

A female figure wears a wreath on her head. She puts her right hand upon the globe and also looks down onto it. Her left hand holds a young child's shoulder. They examine the globe together. Surrounding them are not the plants that are usually depicted in the Western culture (e.g., oak leaves, branches of olive, etc.) but unidentified ones. That provokes the sense of exoticism. And to the French, they have the urge to explore and research those distant Eastern lands. This image suggests the age of Enlightenment and the mission of civilization which was used to justify colonization.
Language: French
Watermark: Mercury head

Reverse:

Similar to the obverse with two elephants – national animal of Laos – in the background.
Language: Vietnamese, Chinese, Laos, Khmer
